I’m going to come clean. Like I’m at an AA meeting or something. Here goes:

My name is Charlie Bear. And I’m a rescue dog. I was incorrigible for a while, but I’ve settled into a mellow dog. I love my life now, and I’m grateful.

There, I said it. If you didn’t know it before, you know it now. I was abandoned as a pup. Found wandering the streets in LA and spinning and chasing my tail on a school playground, I didn’t have a home. A nice lady took me in and a foster mom raised me for a while, before I found my forever home with some really nice peeps who adopted me.

Those peeps have always had dogs that came from shelters or from signs posted at a vet’s office, but this time, they went online and looked up a rescue site www.adoptapet.com.  They weren’t real clear what a “rescue dog” was, but they found out a rescue dog is one that is “saved” or “rescued” if you will, either from a shelter situation where they’ve been placed, or from a lone existence out on the streets (like me). Have you heard about the plight of many dogs today that are finding themselves homeless after years of living in the comfort of a family’s arms? Houses are being foreclosed upon, people are losing their jobs, relocation issues, food costs, health care, and more–all of this is leading to more and more dogs being taken to shelters or worse, just dumped at the side of a road.

That’s what happened with me. I was just abandoned. Happily, I now have a home. But many don’t.

If you are looking for a dog, consider adoption. There’s something cool that comes along with getting a dog from a rescue site or a shelter or a foster home. They almost always have all their shots, maybe even a microchip for identification, they’ve been neutered or spayed, and generally checked over by a vet to be sure they are in good health. For a small fee, usually much less than the cost of “buying” a dog, you get all of that in a nutshell.

So, what’s the COST of adopting a dog? Just a couple of hundred dollars in many cases, and you get everything listed above. What’s the cost of NOT adopting? More dogs will languish in shelters who desperately need homes.

My Mom said there’s a bonus that comes with adopting a dog. You get an enormous amount of love. Most of the dogs just want a home and someone to love them again. Won’t you consider giving that gift to a dog in need?

Don’t forget — Mom Peep and I are running special blog posts featuring real life rescue dogs. Send a picture of YOUR cutie to mom’s email via attachment: bj.taylor@verizon.net. Include a little bit about your furry friend and we’ll post that too.

      Marsha,

I’m glad you love my picture! My Mom Peep fell so hard for me when she saw that photo! And I got the best part of the deal…a furever home, like your Skippy and Bailey, who were also rescued from abandonment.

Gosh, Charlie Bear, you have almost made me want to get a dog, but I think I would be a bad doggie mom cause I’m too selfish and want to travel, and stay out all day and night–kind of like you did on the playground. Have a great day! Lick your Mom for me.

      Hi Linda,
Wiggles and licks could be yours at your nearest animal shelter or online rescue site! My Mom Peep fell in love with my photo online. Could happen to you!
Anyway…when you are ready, there will be a furry friend ready as well.
      Til then,
