3. What is the average lifespan of a small breed dog?
The average lifespan of a small breed dog is anywhere from 12 to 18 years.

4. What is the average lifespan of a large breed dog?
The average lifespan of a large breed dog is 7 to 12 years. As a general rule, the larger the breed, the shorter the lifespan.

6. What is the normal heart rate of a dog compared to a human heart rate?
The normal heart rate of a dog is anywhere from 80 to 120 beats per minute (depending on the breed/size of the dog). Most humans have a heart rate of approximately 60 to 80 beats per minute. A dog’s heart beats twice as fast as a human heart.

12. How does a dog’s sense of taste compare to ours?
Humans have six times as many taste buds as dogs. Most of a dog’s taste buds are located only on the tip of the tongue. Dogs can detect sweet, sour, bitter and salty tastes. A dog smells rather than tastes.

13. What percentage of dogs are thought to be obese in the United States?
Approximately 25 to 40% of all American household pets are obese or overweight.

QUESTION FOR YOU: How many did you get right? Were you surprised in any way?

I learned a lot. And I’m kind of surprised at the age of the oldest dog: 29! Holey cow.

Hope you learned some things about your furry, loved pet. Me, I’m exhausted. Think I’ll take a nap.

Charlie Bear, I did not know there was so much to know about dogs, my peeps said she got a few close and a few almost right. Guess we all need a refresher course on things now and then and you tell your peep ‘thanks for sharing them’. Don’t you get sunburned in the rest of the “Hot Days Of Summer.” Tell your peeps to take care of you and theirselves.. xoxoxo..

    Wags to you!!

      Beaugie,
Mom Peep always lays my blanket in the shade when we’re outside. She learned lots of stuff from the Q & A, like how not to be worried that my heart beats super fast…way faster than hers.

So very interesting, Charlie Bear…which makes me understand why sometimes Clyde barks like something’s terribly wrong when he sees Kitty Thelma walk through the yard–and when they’re together, he loves her. Glad your Mom Peep is taking a little rest. Tell her I understand. xoxo

      Julie,
Dogs are funny creatures, huh? We are very intuitive and we can be extremely protective, and then nurturing as well.
Thanks for commenting. We love you.

      Carol,
I like to learn new things, especially like how a new toy tastes in my mouth when I chomp down on it (gently, of course), or what it feels like to stand outside and let the wind blow through my hair (uh, fur). Thanks for commenting. We LOVE comments!

Wow, so much I didn’t know! Thank you for the lesson. (And, yes, I think it’s a great idea to remind us of what we may have missed… or forgotten.)

      Kay,
I forget, too. Like yesterday I forgot that I ate my dinner and I was looking for it, and Mom Peep said, “Hey, you ate it already!” Seriously, I’m as bad as she is!
